St. Louis, MO – On Saturday, July 13, 2013, Wentzville Firehouse Station 1 and H.E.R.O.E.S. Care are sponsoring a Marrow Registry Drive with Be The Match in honor of Matthew Winkler.

Matthew Winkler, a 12 year Army veteran, deployed 4 times. During his last deployment to Iraq he was exposed to a chemical fire which his doctors say is the reason he is suffering from the rare form of leukemia he is battling today. Matt is currently undergoing chemotherapy in St. Louis and is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant. He and his wife, Amber, have two children, a son who is autistic and a daughter with a hearing disability.

“In all of my years involved with our organization, this is most compelling need I have ever seen”, remarked Dave Woolley, Vice Chairman of the Board of H.E.R.O.E.S. Care. “Unfortunately, currently there is not a match for Matt in the national bone marrow registry.”

“We are proud to host this event and invite everyone to join the mission in search of this lifesaving match for a local veteran in need and for the thousands of other patients like him,” said Nick Box, speaking on behalf of Wentzville Fire Protection District.

“It only takes about 15 minutes and a cheek swab sample to join the registry,” explained Denise Mosley, Account Executive for Be The Match in St. Louis, “and if you match a patient about 75% of the time the donation is done through blood similar to donating platelets or plasma.”

If you are between the ages of 18 and 44 and would like to participate, makes plans to attend as follows:

  • Date: Saturday, July 13, 2013
  • Time: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
  • Location: Wentzville Firehouse Station 1, 209 West Pearce Blvd., Wentzville, MO 63385

To help with the tissue typing expense, Wentzville Firehouse Station 1 is having a BBQ Fundraiser during the Marrow Registry Drive.
